Developing innovative pollutions solutions is our business. Initially, Sea to Sky’s focus was the reduction of marine emissions, however we soon came to realize that waste effluents discharged into the sea from on board vessels and their negative environmental impact was also a serious concern. It became apparent early on that with an integrated holistic system we could provide two solutions to two problems - air pollution and toxic waste water – simultaneously, and protect both sea and sky.  For the past three years we have aligned ourselves with the best in the industry and have been engaged in the ongoing advancement and refinement of our integrated emissions and effluent mitigation system. The demonstration and testing of Sea to Sky’s WiFE on Demand through two high-profile projects at the Port of Los Angeles has demonstrated the system is both effective in reducing emissions as well as safe for the engine.

This spawned Sea to Sky’s development and integration of our on-demand water in fuel emulsion system WiFE on Demand with our effluent detoxification system AquaClean Marine so that toxic waste water on board could be effectively neutralized and used as part of the water in fuel emulsion for the combustion process.  Sea to Sky’s AquaClean Marine is a component that works in tandem with WiFE on Demand and is a reliable water detoxification system for oily bilge water generated on board a vessel.

The use of waste water from on board in the combustion process is an effective solution for a number of reasons. Sea to Sky’s WiFE on Demand emissions mitigation system requires water for use in the emulsion process, however salt water cannot be used as it corrodes the engine, and transporting distilled water for use in the fuel emulsion costs money and uses up precious storage space on board.

In addition, by integrating WiFE on Demand and our AquaClean Marine system using waste water, we also provided a cost-reduction solution for vessel operators. The high cost of waste disposal ashore has been pressuring operators to seek alternative technologies to reduce both environmental damage and disposal costs. The detoxification and use of waste water in our system is not only good for the environment and for meeting stringent effluent regulatory compliance, it is also cost effective and efficient for the vessel operator.

Now with Sea to Sky’s integrated system waste water is too precious to waste.
A recent test conducted by the French Navy shows that Sea to Sky is on the right track; their test results validate our technology. The French Navy test demonstrates that 20% waste water (grey water) used in a fuel emulsion breaks down within approximately ten minutes following emulsification, making it obvious that any potential for this concept hinges on being able to use the waste water shortly after mixing due to its short shelf life after emulsification. We are encouraged by these results because our system produces the emulsification only seconds before it is used in the combustion process, effectively overcoming this barrier. Sea to Sky’s system has transformed waste water on board from a pollutant into a valuable and profitable resource.
