Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions Incorporates AutoPurge Safety System in its November 22, 2006 West Vancouver - Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions Corporation (“Sea to Sky”) (www.seatoskypollutionsolutions.com), a world leader in the development of pollution mitigation and monitoring systems for the marine industry, enlisted the help of leading marine diesel engine manufacturer MAN B&W and has developed the first patented AutoPurge fuel line evacuation safety system for use with Sea to Sky’s new water in fuel emulsions pollution mitigation technology called “WiFE on Demand”. The core components of the water in fuel emulsion system were developed following Sea to Sky winning an international competition for funding from the Port of Los Angeles’ Air Quality Mitigation Incentive Program. Water in fuel emulsion, a proven technology, is the process of emulsifying fuel and water before injection into the engine's combustion cylinder. Vessels using water in fuel emulsion require enhanced fuel line functionality in order to protect the vessel’s engine – worth millions of dollars – from damage in emergency situations. To ensure the safety of the engine, and with the help of MAN B&W and project partner APL Maritime, Sea to Sky has included additional components that provide a rapid evacuation capability for the emulsified fuel from the fuel lines while simultaneously replacing it with non emulsified fuel. Operating in tandem with the WiFE on Demand unit, the WiFE AutoPurge System permits the vessel operator to rapidly flush the fuel pipes with non emulsified fuel in order to prevent coagulation in the fuel lines in the event of a power failure or as the result of a sudden or unexpected fuel pressure decrease. States Sea to Sky’s President Eric Hutchingame, “The WiFE AutoPurge System will now be a fundamental component of the system and is an essential safety feature because coagulation in the fuel lines can cause very serious harm to the engine; in situations of pressure loss the emulsified fuel acts like quick drying cement and would render the ship dead in the water. Addition of this component to the technology is an example of the necessity of a holistic system solution composed of complementary components.” All the components of the WiFE AutoPurge System incorporate passive operating capability such as spring return operated actuators and pneumatic powered purging pumps to ensure continuous uninterrupted functionality in all conditions including a total blackout. A pneumatic powered fuel pump enables the WiFE AutoPurge System to maintain the continuous flow of fuel in the fuel system in total blackout conditions and a continuous supply of non emulsified fuel oil in the fuel system. There is also a manual override to prevent unintended purging. The WiFE AutoPurge System was developed as part of a demonstration project at the port of Los Angeles with shipping giant APL Maritime and largely funded by the Carl Moyer Program. Based on previous water in fuel emulsion studies it is anticipated that Sea to Sky’s WiFE on Demand will substantially reduce emissions. Reductions anticipated are in the order of 1:1 for nitrous oxide (NOx) and 1:2 to 1:3 for particulate matter (PM) based on water percentage (i.e. 30% water reduces NOx by 30% and PM by 60-90%). Final operational emissions testing of WiFE on Demand is expected to be conducted in the third quarter of 2007 by emissions experts at the University of California Riverside. About Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions Corporation Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions (www.seatoskypollutionsolutions.com) is a global consortium based in West Vancouver, Canada that includes a network of leading environmental technology developers, marine and aerospace manufacturers and environmental stewards to serve the maritime community. Sea to Sky designs innovative, integrated system-based solutions that eliminate the environmental impact of marine vessels, including the effects of toxic diesel emissions. Sea to Sky’s mission is to eliminate discharges of effluents into the Sea from marine vessels while simultaneously reducing the NOx and particulate matter (PM) emissions they put into the Sky, as reflected in their slogan “Breathe Easy - the Coast is Clear”.
