Shipping Leader APL Announces Installation of New Clean Air Technology

December 4, 2006

Los Angeles - Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions Corporation (“Sea to Sky”) (www.seatoskypollutionsolutions.com), the preeminent world leader in the development of pollution mitigation and monitoring systems for the marine industry, and shipping giant APL Maritime Ltd. are testing Sea to Sky’s new clean air on-demand water in fuel emulsion technology on one of APL’s vessels as part of a three-year demonstration project to determine its effectiveness in reducing polluting emissions. Sea to Sky designs innovative, integrated system-based solutions that eliminate the environmental impact of marine vessels, including the effects of toxic diesel emissions. Sea to Sky’s proprietary water in fuel emulsion technology was developed during an earlier successful project at the Port of Los Angeles after Sea to Sky won an international competition for funding to develop prototype unit on a vessel owned by Seaspan Ship Management.

Today at a press conference in Los Angeles on board the 863-foot M/V APL Singapore, APL executives announced that it will soon begin testing three pollution-reduction technologies on APL vessels calling at California ports. One is Sea to Sky’s proprietary retrofitted on-demand water in fuel emulsification system called “WiFE on Demand”, an integrated system that injects water into the fuel burned by the ship's main engine. Water in fuel emulsion is a practical and effective solution to reducing marine emissions because it can be utilized on existing vessels by modifying their engines. Emission reductions anticipated are in the order of 1:1 for nitrous oxide (NOx) and 1:2 to 1:3 for particulate matter (PM) based on water percentage (i.e. 30% water reduces NOx by 30% and PM by 60-90%). In-cylinder evaporation of the water during the process also improves the atomization of the fuel causing it to burn more completely, which further reduces polluting emissions.

In addition to Sea to Sky’s system, APL will test the use of slide valves on marine engines to reduce the leakage of fuel that remains in the fuel injection nozzle when the nozzle is closed. Slide valves could reduce emissions of particulate matter and hydrocarbons in the exhaust by almost 50 percent. Another technology the shipping company is testing is an advanced cylinder lubricating system that optimizes the amount of lube oil required for the cylinder liners. It is anticipated that this system will reduce cylinder oil consumption 20 to 50 percent, which will in turn reduce particulate emissions.

Dr. Wayne Miller a professor of emissions and fuels at the University of California Riverside will be responsible for monitoring and quantifying the results of Sea to Sky’s water in fuel emulsion system, with emissions testing to be performed in three phases from August to October 2007. The first phase will test the emulsification capability of the WiFE system and verify that the emulsified fuel will clean the soot from the exhaust system. The second phase consists of the extended use of the emulsifier (i.e. homogenizer) at 0% water content, and the third phase will be the formal emission testing scheduled for late October 2007.

If the testing of Sea to Sky’s technology system is successful, APL will consider installing the system on their fleet of more than 100 container ships, 23 of which call at California ports.

Reducing marine emissions at the Port of L.A. and surrounding communities has become a primary focus due to the increasing vessel traffic and high levels of associated air pollution and its serious negative effects on human health and the environment. Just last month the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach jointly announced a Clean Air Action Plan aimed to reduce port-related air pollution by 45 percent over the next five years, and the Port of Oakland will implementing more stringent measures as well. Many vessel operators are voluntarily installing air pollution reduction technologies in order to comply with the area’s increasingly strict air pollution regulations.
