Shipping Giant APL to Lead Demonstration Project Showcasing Sea to Sky Pollution Solution’s New Water in Fuel Emulsion Technology

August 15, 2006

West Vancouver, B.C. - Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions Corporation (“Sea to Sky”) (www.seatoskypollutionsolutions.com), the preeminent world leader in the development of pollution mitigation and monitoring systems for the marine industry has formally entered into an agreement with shipping giant APL Maritime to lead a marine air pollution abatement demonstration project at the Port of Los Angeles. The high-profile project will demonstrate the effectiveness of Sea to Sky's new proprietary water in fuel emulsion technology to reduce polluting emissions on APL vessel M/V APL Singapore.

The demonstration project with APL is a result of a previous successful project Sea to Sky led to develop a prototype water in fuel emulsion system after the company won an international competition for funding through the Port of Los Angeles’s Air Quality Mitigation Incentive Program. Prior to this, Sea to Sky had joined The Georgia Basin Marine Vessel Air Quality Work Group (http://www.chamber-of-shipping.com/index/air_chamber) to facilitate the development of Sea to Sky’s air pollution mitigation technology. The Georgia Basin Marine Vessel Air Quality Work Group is a Canadian subset of the West Coast Collaborative and was established to facilitate an exchange of information and to develop coordinated and collaborative policies, programs and actions for air emission inventories and management related to marine vessels operating in the waters of the Georgia Basin. The Work Group brings together senior staff representatives of government and the marine industry.

Remarks Sea to Sky’s President Eric Hutchingame, “We are delighted to be part of this marine work group. Our proprietary water in fuel emulsion system’s success is in no small part due to our participation in the group which has been an invaluable forum for information sharing and networking toward a common goal of cleaner air.”

Sea to Sky will retrofit its “WiFE on Demand” (WiFE is an acronym for Water in Fuel Emulsion) on the main engine of 863-foot container vessel M/V APL Singapore to determine it effectiveness in reducing marine emissions, particularly nitrous oxides and particulate matter, a primary cause of serious respiratory problems. While water in fuel emulsion is a proven technology, Sea to Sky’s technology is the first to provide “on demand” water in fuel emulsion so that it can be suspended when more power and torque are required, such as in docking situations. It is also the first to use onboard oily waste water in the combustion process, thereby eliminating effluents discharged into the sea and transported ashore. These features effectively overcome previous barriers to water in fuel emulsion’s use by the marine industry.

Based on previous studies, emission reductions anticipated are in the order of 1:1 for nitrous oxide (NOx) and 1:2 to 1:3 for particulate matter (PM) based on water percentage (i.e. 30% water reduces NOx by 30% and PM by 60-90%).The in-cylinder evaporation of the water during the process also improves the atomization of the fuel causing it to burn more completely. University of California Riverside will be responsible for baseline emission testing prior to the equipment’s installation, as well as post-installation emission testing results in August and September 2007.

A number of other high-profile industry stakeholders are directly involved in the demonstration project including: California Air Districts (Bay Area AQMD, Ventura County APCD, San Luis Obispo County APCD, Santa Barbara County APCD), the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, industry leader MAN B&W Diesel, University of California Riverside (Center for Environmental Research & Technology (C-CERT)) and Danica Diesel.
